Professor Arvind Merchant is a graduate of the premier Design Institute of India, the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. He graduated in 1978 as Industrial Designer (product design discipline).

In a career spanning more than 29 years he has extensive professional consultancy and Design experience in the area of product, exhibitions, Graphics, visual identity, publishing, Advertising, craft and toys. He has extensive experience in design education in the area of Industrial Design, Communication Design, Fashion & Crafts. The details of his experience are as follows:

DETAILS: Professor Arvind began his career as the coordinator, Chennai Design Cell of the National Institute of Design. During his tenure at NID he provided design services to industry especially to the small scale sector and government Institutions. Design of stackable chair in cane (rattan), landscape design of cafeteria, lay out of trade fair, Mixer-jar for small family, packaging for ceiling fan and office interior were some of the key projects.

PRODUCT RANGE DEVELOPMENT FOR SPECIAL GROUPS. Action for Ability Development and Inclusion (AADI) as part of their objective & mission has been providing vocational training to persons with disability for socio-economic sustainability. Block Printing, Bag making, stationary products and products like photo frames etc. were some of the vocations adopted by the persons with disability.
Many of them are supported by either siblings or by caretaker in order to gain socio-economic sustainability. The project envisaged an interactive product development workshop with active participation of the selected special persons, the students of design, siblings & caretakers, AADI and NIFT Faculty members. The interactive product development workshop was targeted towards the special persons and the students of design as beneficiaries and was envisaged to achieve the objectives to gain insight into the process of innovation essentially geared towards expansion of product range within the context of the vocations adopted by the persons with disability and to enhance skills imperative to the market needs.
DOMESTIC TREND LANDSCAPE FOR HOME APPLIANCE project was a study & analysis of domestic trends of color, form, material, texture, and prints and the consumer preferences of the above in home appliances. The study was carried out for ‘Whirlpool' company.
KALASHKSHA PROGRAMME was development and structuring of an pedagogical tool for the craft communities of chhatisgarh state to internalise the aspect of recognition and conservation of identity through nurturing of both tangible and intangible interface of their heritage and to empower the communities to take conscious decisions to nurture the interface like market forces, new technology & design, product diversification.
DESIGN CAPABILITY ENHANCEMENT TRAINING PROGRAMME a two tier training system was evolved & adopted, for embroidery producer groups of ‘Poogal' area of Bikaner district, which strengthens the Design Capabilities of the master embroiderers and graduate them to officially acknowledged level of the Trainers. The Training Programme was launched as a pilot project and with an intention that on successful completion of the Programme the outcome and feedback of the programme should facilitate further promotion on long term and on sustainable basis.

Awards & Achievements
Professor Arvind was invited to the symposium on ‘Design for Needs” at Royal College of Arts, London in 1976. He presented his project of Design of “Harvesting Implement”. He also visited several Design Educational institutes in Europe and Design firms. Later the same project got special mention in the ICSID award conferred to the National Institute of Design for its outstanding contribution in Design and design education.

Professor Arvind also visited Germany in 2002 to attend conference “Knowledge Management” organized by Design Management Institute, 29 Temple Place , Boston , MA 02111-1350 USA .
In 2005 Professor Arvind visited Beijing , China as part of a delegation of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). During his visit he interacted with china's leading federations of fashion designers, Textile manufacturers, wool manufacturers and Fashion & Design Academic Institutes to develop cross platform for Fashion businesses.
