He, with Ivan Chermayeff of Chermayeff and Geismar as consultant, then worked on design of the corporate identity programme for ‘Calico’ – a company with interests in textiles, fibres, chemicals and plastics and subsequently implemented the new identity within the company operations at Mumbai, Baroda and Ahmedabad. This project took 3 years.
Deepankar has designed voltage stabilizers and blood pressure monitors, made a few short films and has travelled extensively in India, documenting and learning about rural resources, artifacts and lifestyles. He has also been conducting workshops at IICD (Indian Institute of Crafts and Design), Jaipur.
He set up Images Communications in 1984, a communications firm based in Delhi that has handled a variety of projects for clients in government, NGO and corporate sectors.
This firm has been providing design and production services in the area of brand development, exhibitions, book design and marketing communications for corporations and has helped launch several brands and products in a diversity of markets. It has also done exhibitions and communication projects for the government and NGOs. Examples include an exhibition on the ‘Wastelands of India’ inaugurated by the then prime minister of India – Mr. Rajiv Gandhi and the launch of ‘Ciprolet’ in the China market for Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories apart from several books for Eicher Goodearth and Archaeological Survey of India.
Deepankar has devised a creative workshop called ‘Developing Fresh Viewpoints’ which he conducts at design institutes and which he has been adapting for executive development programmes in corporations. He writes on ‘design’ issues and also publishes an on-line journal called ‘Thinking about Design’. He likes to play golf on the weekend.
