SqautEase-A Clean and Comfortable Toilet Solution

An estimated 4.5 million people in India lack access to proper sanitation facilities. A situation that contributes to environmental pollution as well as deaths of millions of people every year due to improper hygiene. A student of Product Design and alumni of MIT ID batch 2014, Satyajit Mittal, addresses to this global health crisis with interdisciplinary solutions called "SquatEase - A Clean + Comfortable Toilet Solution".

SquatEase, is a unique squat toilet pit which makes squatting more ergonomic and pain-free. Squatting while using an "Indian Toilet" can be stressful on the knees and requires balancing, often causing knee related problems over a period of time, also very difficult for the elderly, so he came up with this human centred designed product.

It is also the first ever unidirectional toilet, which solves a lot of problems related to maintenance of squat toilets in public systems and accessible for differently abled such as the visually impaired.

The design of SquatEase is a very scalable and has the potential to be commercially viable as it’s been designed to the existing squat toilets and can bring a fundamental change in how squat toilets are perceived today. This design can replace the existing squat toilets in both commercial space as well as in case of public toilets and create a positive change in people's life.

SquatEase is a recipient of the Nidhi Prayas Grant 2017 by Nidhi Prayas Center, Science and Technology Park, Pune promoted by NSTEDB, Dept. of Science and Technology, Government of India.

It was recently presented at the SIWI World Water Week 2017 in Stockholm to the key people in the water and sanitation sector from around the world. Also, the product has been recognized and awarded the iF Public Value Student Award 2016. The concept was displayed and presented at the International Design Museum, Die Neue Sammlung, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich in February 2016 and was widely appreciated.
